Is It Time to Paint Your Doors?

Paint Your Door - GF Moore PaintingExcept for your floors, doors probably are some the most used parts of your home.

When they're not greeting guests, withstanding the weather, or getting slammed, they are being fingerprinted by oily dirty fingers and pushed open by feet.

I think it's safe to say your doors get used and abused. That's why it's so important to take good care of them when they need a little TLC.

Most of us think we know how to slap on a coat of paint and make things look better. But the truth is that most people either don't know how or don't take the time to do the job right by:

  • Properly preparing the surfaces
  • Using the right kind of paint
  • Having the right tools for the job
  • Know how to apply the paint correctly

What's true when it comes to painting walls is even more true when it comes to painting doors.

Painting a door

Whether your doors are interior or exterior, there are steps that need to be taken to do the job thorough and right:

  • Begin by taking the door off the hinges
  • Remove the doorknobs and other hardware and clean them so they look as nice as the door when it's finished
  • Sand the door lightly to remove any blemishes and to rough up the surface so the new paint will adhere properly.
  • Prime the door if necessary for situations such as this:
    • If it is a new surface that has never been painted
    • If the door was previously stained
    • If you will be using a light color over a dark color
    • If the previous paint was oil based and you're using latex
  • If your doors have panels, the panels should be painted first with a roller
  • Then brush on the paint into the panel grooves, brushing the same direction as the wood grain
  • Roll the outside parts of the panel, painting the vertical pieces before the horizontal parts
  • Paint the edges of the door.
  • When that side of the door is dry you can turn it over to paint the other side
  • When both sides are dry both sides will need a 2nd coat.
  • Put the hardware back on and rehang your door

That's a pretty time consuming process, and what if you have more than one door that needs to be painted?

Painting doors takes a lot of time and a lot of patience to do it right.
